should I get carpet, tile, or laminate flooring in my house?

In our house we have it all...Laminate, tile, and regular carpet.

Laminate - by far the easiest upkeep. Vacuuming alone usually will do it, unless something is spilled on it. Then a simple wipe with a damp rag, and it's done.

Tile - the grout is impossible to keep clean. I've tried everything. The only way I can clean it is on my hands and knees with a wire brush. It took me months to clean it that way, and by the time I was done it needed it again. And yes, it is very cold.

Carpet - warmer than tile, but hard to keep clean. Vacuuming helps (of course) but it really should be shampooed to clean it deep down. Not nearly as easy to clean as Laminate is.

Now we don't have carpet tiles...just regular carpet. I guess the advantage with the carpet tiles would be that you can replace them as needed. Still...I imagine they'd be very hard to keep really clean, just like carpet is.

If I were you, I'd go for the Laminate. It's warmer than tile and much easier to maintain than either carpet or tile.

Pool Deck Ideas

On a hot summer's afternoon, what's the best thing that you can do? Take a swim in the backyard pool and then relax on the pool deck. Take a look at the following pool deck ideas mentioned below, which are stylish as well as comfortable.

When you have a backyard to your home, one of the most necessary things to be accommodated is a swimming pool. There are many ways you can build the pool and the deck around it. If you have a pool large enough to accommodate even four people at a time, you will need a deck around it. These decks are meant for seating purposes and as party areas. You can construct wooden, concrete, above ground, and in-ground decks. No matter what the material used for construction is, they look very presentable and classy around blurry pool. If you're thinking of building a pool in the backyard or want to redo the deck, here are some fantastic ideas that you can take inspiration from.

Concrete Deck

Most of the decks are made of concrete as they look very symmetrical and organized. They normally are characterized by a three foot concrete deck around the perimeter of the pool. Sometimes it depends on the total area of the pool. In this design, the shapes and sizes can be flexible, and creative ideas can be implemented. This gives you the freedom to use innovative ideas around the pool like having an open bar, or a Jacuzzi around the pool. You can also construct a landscape around the pool or the deck area to make the entire deck look very elegant and pretty.

Wooden Deck

These are the most economical choices for a pool deck, as they are cheap. Not only that, they also look great. They are mostly used for above-ground pools. Wood is easier to build and shape, so pools which are above the ground level can have wooden decks to make them look attractive. They are extremely comfortable. Another economical advantage of these decks is that you don't need to clean them or maintain them once they are polished. Just keeping them clean and termite-free would do for the maintenance. Also, they do not need a separate landscape or a garden, you can simply keep plants around and the deck will look very attractive.

Stone Paver Deck

These are similar to the concrete decks. The best part about these is that they don't need to be colored or finished, as the stone and brick looks are very authentic and gives a brilliant feel to the setting. These stones and bricks also come in various shapes and sizes, so you could use them to design the deck and give them a rustic look. These paver decks are generally useful only for in-ground pools and sometimes, above ground ones (if there is a Jacuzzi). They protect the side of the deck which is water-soaked so that the stones don't erode fast.

These ideas can be used for right from tiny backyard pools to large mansion pools. You can come up with your own ideas for outdoor decorations like landscaping and choice and placement of the furniture around the pool on the deck and enjoy the summer by the poolside.

Only after you take into all this information, you will be able to determine your real material costs. Obviously, you wont tell this to your client directly. You need to keep a profit margin that prevails in the industry so that you dont charge too high.

Next, you are to measure the distance you had to cover to get the pipes or other parts. If you had to replace or repair any part, add the time cost for that- it would account for as labor cost discussed later. You are to be aware of the exact prices of all the items you purchase. Usually, once your company goodwill has established, your relationships with your suppliers becomes more easily going and cooperative. You might even get bulk buying discounts, which would reduce your costs. They would offer you competitive prices and good quality that would maintain your companys reputation as well as theirs. Now, assuming you have all your materials, you are to add up your costs and in the total you get, add a further ten dollars for the small items you might have used such as the nuts, bolts, screws and for the tools you used on your part. This would be the final cost of your material expenses on your plumbing job.

Now coming over to the labor cost, you are to round the hours you spent for the completion of the job. This sum of hours is to include the time you spent on your visits to your supplier of parts, as this was not something you did for your personal requirement but for the client. You could actually give this explanation if argued upon this issue. Now determine your hourly rate which on average is more or less sixteen dollars. But in case, your state has a higher or lower average, go with it as it is always better to choose the safe route. In case, you are a newbie and you have no idea, then you probably ring your colleagues or any other plumbing company to get an estimate.

To reach your final cost, you are to multiply your previously calculated hours with your hourly rate. This would give you your labor cost total. After adding the material cost total to it, you would get your final total cost. Your profit margin would be around at least 8 percent- not necessarily true for all areas, so get an idea from your companys objective. Here you are with the final price you are to charge your client with, along with a handsome chunk of profits for your company.

Renovation Project - House Crashers

We have lived here for twenty-two years. We have borrowed money on this house three times but the house never has been finished the way I saw it to be when we first moved in. I am very frustrated wtih this house and myself for wasting so much money on this house and never getting it the way I want it. You could say its the money pit. We could have moved over the years but we raised our sons and now our grandson in this house and I love the location of our house so we have stayed here. As it has been pointed out to me by several friends, family members and bankers I could have built a new house for what I have sunk into this old one. Today I am starting this hub as an ongoing project to see what happens if anything. I have submitted our house to be on the show House Crashers. I have sent all the information required and photos that were asked for, so now I start this hub in hopes that my old house might get the repairs it needs and once and for all we could remodel it. My husband and youngest son that lives here at the moment, think I am nuts for even thinking of such a thing. They think nothing will come of this while I think I will get an email from the host of the show or the network. Time will only tell....so this hub starts today and I will add to it each day and talk about this house and my wait for House Crashers to call. This is day 1 of the submission to House Crashers.

Day 2 of the wait for help with this old house. Let me start writing about how we came to live here in this old house. When we had our third son we were living back in Atlanta, Texas and my husband had just got done with basic training in the Arkansas Army National Guard. Me and our two sons one five the other three were living with my mother. Our third son was born while my husband was still away. As soon as my husband got back we got an apartment for us and our now three sons. It was a large apartment and nice but outside was not a good place for children. A parking lot was not a good place for little boys to be playing. A couple that we know saw this house for sale and it had a lot of land that went along with it that they wanted. They didn't want the house. The land here joined their land back behind us in the pasture. So they wanted to buy the house and the land but sale the house to us with three acres. It was an easy way to get out of that apartment and into a house even though this house needed lots of work. I saw promise in the house and the yard and pasture was a great place for three little boys to be raised. I could see them running in the yard and playing there before we even moved in. The location of the house was on the same road as I grew up on as a child. My three sisters lived on this same road and my brother not far from here. Location was great, house not so good. It was kind of creepy looking inside the house because there was old paper wal paper all over the place with cheese cloth underneath it. The floors, ceiling and walls were all tounge and groove wood. No insulation in the ceiling or walls just wood. There was old green shag carpet in what I considered to be the living room and the dining room. The one bathroom was small and had contact paper on the walls. Lots and lots of orange and pink contact paper. That was the first thing that had to go. We moved in and started ripping up carpet and pulling down contact paper. We got the house liveable and made three of the rooms bedrooms. One room that is now a bedroom had chains hanging down in four places and a frame of wood hanging from the chains. My mother who was alive then told me that this had been a quilting room. She explained how the ladies would sit around this frame and quilt. First time I had saw something like that. That same room due to the cold I guess had cardboard nailed all over the wall on top of the wall paper. I had never seen wall paper that had the texture of actual paper. It wasn't thick at all but very thin and brittle at this point. All of that had to come down. When it was done the room was nothing but tongue and groove wood everywhere which I decided to just paint. The other rooms that the boys were in had been paneled. So with a functional bathroom and beds in all the rooms we were living in our old house. Now I was right about the yard, our boys loved running and playing in the yard and the dog was outside with them most of the time. Our dog at the time was Tasha our first Doberman. I had got the dog the same time I married my husband. She was his dog. I had to get used to the dog in the beginning because she would run to the phone everytime it would ring and try to bite me on the butt when I answered it. She was also an expert at getting chocolate chip cookies from me. Over the years and by the time we had our children me and the dog were buddies. She had been a great guard dog while livng up in Arkansas before our youngest son was born and now she was charged with guarding three little boys instead of just two. Oh yea one other creepy thing about the house...there is a long hallway down the entire house and the rooms on either side. There again tongue and groove wood and no lights. It looked very creepy at night and the sounds of an old house are something I had to get used to also. Sometimes you would just know somebody was walking around in this house at night. Of course there wasn't. Ok enough for day 2. I have work in the morning and a little grandson to help get a bath and wash a couple of loads of laundry before I can go to bed tonight. It may be hard for me to write about the house and keep things in order as we have lived here. Maybe it will all work out ok in the end.

Monday July 12th - 2010 three days after I submitted my house to house crashers. No word from anybody about that yet. You never know, I may never hear from them, then again they could email and say hey we are coming to Texas. Stranger things have happened. Where was I on the house. OH yea, it was somewhat scary. This house had two wood burning stoves in it when we moved in. One in the living room and one in the back end of the kitchen, the other end of the house. That one was like an insert. That one had a chimney which is still on the outside of the house but we closed that up and took that insert out. Back there now is a room so to speak where computers and such are. A few plants too. I love plants and usually have them and fresh flowers in the house year round. Since we live out we do have a well. The well has been one of those things we have had to fix many many times. When we would do one thing to this house something else would break or have to be fixed and over a period of years us and our family and friends started calling it the money pit, after that movie with Tom Hanks in it where their house was a money pit. I think Tom Hanks was in that. The water heater blew up once and messed up floor and we had to replace all that. Looked nice in the beginning not now. That was done long ago too. Have to stop now. More later.

So this is day four of my plan to see if I can get house crashers to come crash this house. No email from House Crashers yet. I wonder if you can submit your house more than once?? The next few days I probably won't write a lot. I have vacation on the brain. Ok so after pulling down that contact paper off the bathroom walls we took part of the closet out in the room beside the bathroom and made the bathroom bigger. Before we did that you could be on the toilet and just step right over in the bathtub. They were that close to each other. Taking out part of that closet and moving the bathtub over was a good ideal. It made the bathroom bigger. Then we put new wall paper in that bathroom and a new ceiling in there. We also added a new window, but we never to this day have trimmed that window out. We have also taken down that wall paper years ago and started over. Right now there is sheet rock on the walls in there. It has been that way for years. New tub, new toilet and vanity but no new wall paper and no trim. Oh well.

Day 5 (five) no emails and really only one comment on this hub page. Oh well I just want to get this all wrote down somewhere anyway. I keep journals hand written ones that I have had since I was sixteen years old. Not totally sure where all of them are but I need to find them all and put them up for safe keeping. Let me see we have had this house painted several times and always a different color. At the moment part of the house is one color while the rest of it is a different color. Now that is just wrong on our part.

Been a few days since I wrote. I was on vacation and the last thing I wanted to think about was this house. Of course if I used all the money we have spent on vacations over the years I could have a finished house too.Don't forget I have borrowed money to fix this hosue three times though and it never got done. Anyway back home and glad to be home but things to do around the house for sure. Checked my email no word from House Crashers. I just knew they would email me and say we are coming to Texas. BUT no. I will keep hoping. Never give up.

Ok so I don't know how many days this is after I submitted the house to the DIY network.. BUT I did hear back from them. What I signed up for was not house crashers but in fact Renovation Realities. On this DIY show you and your spouse are the hosts of the show. You do all the wok and pay for the renovation. The only thing the network does is compensate you for $3000.00 after all is done. So there are several reasons I may not want to do this. First of all we aren't real good at home renovation, I kind of wanted or thought they would pay for the renovation and I am not sure we want to be on TV trying to do something we don't feel like we are good at. You also have to pick one room. This is not for an entire house, like I thought House Crashers would be. I could be wrong there too. I have to read all the fine print and I have just now contacted the DIY network person back. I have asked a few questions. Before I go making a DVD of us and the house and so on I need more information. I will keep you posted of course.

I don't know where I was on talking about this old house either. I know I had mentioned how creepy it was when we first moved in. The noises and the long hallway with no lights. We have done some renovation to the house over the years but then you start one thing and something else has to be fixed. It bleeds you dry. Sucks the money right out of your pockets. So for years we have done absolutely nothing to this house. We have lived here but spent money on traveling, Christmas, and other things we find important. So here we sit in this house that needs to be renovated. Signing up for this show was a thought I had to have somebody come in and help this all take place. Not sure like I said if we want to be the ones to try the renovation ourself. The first time I borrowed money on the house I should have hired a professional contractor. I do have a love/hate relationship with this old house. I don't know though leaving it behind has come to my mind here lately.

Aug. 12th - 2010 I have been too busy to write on here or even think about this house and all the things I want to do to it. Like I had mentioned I had borrowed money on this house three times. Refinanced it three times to get money for the repairs. Somehow that money never got spent on the right things. A huge mistake on my part.

Ok so after borrowing money three seperate times and trying to get different folks to do this and that on the house and no major results....we kind of gave up. My husband didn't even want to touch this house or try to do any repairs. He is a mechanic not a home repair guy. When he would go out of town I would get this ideal that I could start a project and have it done before he got back in town. That was always a mistake too. I would get it started, get in a fix and have to call somebody to come help me before he got back home. Not to mention spending yet more money. Floors have been replaced and water heaters replaced. The one good thing we did get done was the ceilings in the living room, dining room and kitchen all got replaced and look nice. After things settle down a bit I will start looking for a different show to see if I can find somebody to help me get this house redone. There have to be other shows that would be interested in tearing down and building back this house. I don't think I will give up.

I think I wll only update this hub when I sign up for a show or I actually do a home repair. I would love to write a play by play of what we were doing if we got to fix this house. Then again we could just sell out and move. That might be easier. I don't think my kids would like that and I would miss the house too. Like I said earlier I think it has character and I would love to fix it up. Lots of great memories here of our kids growing up and all their friends. I will write more later.

U.S. demand for kitchen cabinets projected to rise six percent.

A new report on the U.S. kitchen cabinet market by the AKTRIN Furniture Information Center projects that the U.S. demand for kitchen cabinets will increase over six percent per year through 2008, reaching a total of $16 billion. The projected increase in demand is based on anticipation of stronger expenditures for residential repair and improvement projects, which will constitute the largest end use for cabinets. Kitchen cabinets are expected to benefit from a continuing trend toward using more cabinets to provide increased utility in the kitchen, as well as by the rapidly expanding range of cabinet styles and options and larger kitchens in new construction. The rising use of kitchen cabinets in other rooms (including laundry rooms and media rooms) is also expected to increase demand. For more information go to http:/furnitureinfo.com/1320.htm.

The Arthur Heurtley House; 1902

The Arthur Heurtley HouseArthur Heurtley was a local Chicago-area banker who had expressed an interest in supporting the arts. He commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build a home for him and like many of the other homes designed by Wright at the time, there are those who will argue that the Arthur Heurtley home is the "first fully mature" Prairie style house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Though it may or may not necessarily be the "first," it is still an important part of Wright's development as an architect.

Early Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture: The Arthur Heurtley House in Oak Park, Illinois

Owned by Mr. Arthur Heurtley and his wife, Grace Crampton Heurtley, the Heurtley home is located approximately half a block away from Frank Lloyd Wright's own home and studio; both homes are located within Oak Park city limits. The exterior of the home is constructed of Roman brick, making it unique in the fact that the other Prairie style homes built by Wright during that same era were usually constructed of a stucco exterior with wood trim. The home does, however, feature an arched doorway similar to that of the arched doorway found on the Frank W. Thomas house, also located in Oak Park.

Like many of the Prairie style homes of the era, the Arthur Heurtley house also features a low, broad hipped roof and overhanging eaves. The Heurtley home also features a hand of art glass windows on the second story of the home's facade.

According to information provided by Bluffton University in Ohio, the second floor of the home contains the main living space as well as the children's playroom. Meanwhile, the first floor of the home contains a laundry area. The house also has a library, music room and dining room complete with a breakfast bay.

The Arthur Heurtley House Today (2010)

The Arthur Heurtley house was purchased in 1997 by a couple named Ed and Diana Baehren. Over the next five years, they would document their restoration process where the home would be restored to museum quality. Near the end of the home's restoration process, it was also declared a National Landmark (March of 2001.)

Light many of Wright's works, this home has remained a private residence since it's construction over 100 years ago. Visitors who wish to admire the home should do so from the street and avoid trespassing so as to respect the privacy of the owners.
